Touted as an easy-to-use video editor, Windows Movie strips the movie making elements down to the bare bones where you can navigate the features without drowning in the complexity of product intended for advanced filmmakers. You can run this software from a USB drive, and it works like the original Windows Movie Maker. For example, design and build attractive multimedia presentations that display your favorite video clips and shots in all their sparkling glory. Take advantage of the transition and video effects to finish with a more professional signature.

Like with the original name, Portable Windows Movie Maker can be enjoyed by beginners because of its simplicity. As you have media you want to use, you can import it to your presentation and interface and drag it over to the timeline. As you continue, add the desired effects to make it more than just film. In total, Portable Windows Movie Maker includes over 100 transitions, and you can spice up your videos with 76 different special effects. Before you finish with the movie, you can check the effects in the preview menu.

We do not recommend everyone choose Portable Windows Movie Maker because as we said, it's dead simple. The problem with that being how it limits the more advanced film makers from making a movie into its fullest potential. However, beginner filmmakers will revel in the simplicity because the learning curve doesn't exist. You can have zero film editor's creditibility and still create an impressive movie. After you finish editing the last scene, you can export the video into several formats. The format choice depends on size and how you plan to use it. For example, what do you want to do with the movie? Do you want to publish it to a website, share it via CD or save it to your hard drive?

Outside making a movie, Portable Windows Movie Maker lets you collect your favorite pictures and video clips and add some professional transition effects. The key behind the software boils down to simple use. You have almost no easier way to combine your videos into a movie with background music, special effects and transitions. In the beginning, Microsoft released a product so simple that it had no advanced capabilities. Inch by inch, however, the software has slowly grown to include anti-shake, voice-over recording and digital video editing in a valuable free app.

We should clarify that the software still lacks many of the advanced features you might find with other products. Apple's entry-level software called iMovie still outperforms Portable Windows Movie Maker in every way, but if you desire a product to leap over the bar of basic movie making needs, then you should hit the bullseye here without a problem.
